Medieval Town with Middle Ages Charm

View of Tallinn

The capital and the premier metropolis of Estonia, the modern city of almost 400 thousand people betrays little of its centuries history as a crossroad of politics, business, trade and cultural centre. Yet this modern city of almost 400,000 people holds much to attract a curious traveler, from imposing squares, monumentalist architecture and fine museums, to the medieval streetscape and stone walls surrounding the Old Town, one of the UNESCO’s World Heritage places.

Cobblestones, courtyards and craftsmen
To taste the atmosphere of Middle Ages a Tallinn’s visitor firstly should take a walk down the cobblestone streets, diving into backstreets and common craftsmen workshops. The fascinating houses look like small museums of medieval; nevertheless their owners still make there their souvenirs.
Medieval cuisine Tradition-bound, alive and alluring
While modern Tallinn leaves imagination exhausts as a usual big European city, the enchanting venues of the Old Town make their visitor taste the atmosphere of the Past, as in a superimposed film. Since 1997 Tallinn’s status as a museum city has ensured it remains the most homogenous collection of architecture in the Medieval world, deep-frozen, immune to time and lost in romantic imagination.
Medieval cuisine turns you to the past
“Have you tried our national dish?” is a common express of genuine Tallinners. Really, the Estonian cuisine is the national pride and joy. For many travelers bread, fruits, meat and vegetables are saviors of the dishes. Not only on a festival days or at large family celebrations can the visitor hope to sample all of Estonian dishes – try yourself joining at Middle Ages romantic sprit in a restaurant or a café somewhere in the Old Town – after a half an hour you will completely forget what century and year is today.
Golden heritage of old craftsmen schools
For a living museum of Tallinn’s crafts pay a visit to a workshop, handicraft house or market. The grandfathers or modern craftsmen were real masters – to understand it you certainly should take a look to their descendants and their creative activities. Traditions still live and every new generation takes and multiplies the old heritage of them. If you are a lucky, you may see the production of craftsmen – some of them work at the shops. You can admire the process during many hours – it seems that something magical happens in small rooms and galleries of the Town’s backyards.
Three different cultures in one city
The hard history of Tallinn made the city the heritage of three different cultural layers – Western, Eastern and its own, Estonian. This mixture completes different traditions into a single atmosphere as in no one city else. It’s impossible to describe the spirit of Tallinn; it can only be felt and tasted.
A modern city with a medieval twist, the Estonian capital is one place where the past is still alive and kicking!
Modern Tallinn
The city of Tallinn has grown into the Baltic’s the most modern and premier.
Never let ourselves distrust the majority and big opportunities of the city in the future, there’s no question of Estonian capital’s main valuable – its roots and heritage from the past. The pearl of Tallinn’s necklace is the Old Town. The massive fortress wall that growing up into mantle of medieval moss, and labyrinth stone paved alleys (all this was erected mainly from 11th to 15th cc.) stand hitherto. So forget about petrol, cars and engines in this part of the city. This kind of ecological “cruelty” let visitors and Tallinners walk down the streetscape admiring the same infrastructure as our predecessors did many centuries ago. Really, when you get into the medieval downtown, a strong feeling of romantic past never leaves you, as you see the same towers and spires, squares and stones, straight old streets and narrow lanes like people did centuries ago. No one place in the world is able bring you back to the Middle Ages as Tallinn can. So when UNESCO added Estonian capital’s Old Town to its World Heritage list in 1997, it couldn’t come as a something unusual.
